Madigan Army Medical Center provides a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. The Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Pathway provides a systematic approach for the patient with a breast problem leading to the diagnosis of cancer. One of the first programs of its kind in the U.S. military and civilian medical systems, the Pathway facilitates a timely and reliable mechanism ensuring each patient receives appropriate care. Benefits of the Pathway include patient enrollment, communication and patient advocacy. This consultative service provides educational material, ensures continuity of care, provides continual updates of patient progress to the team, remains a single point of contact for the patient and maintains a tracking system. The team, consisting of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and other ancillary staff, expertly manage patients undergoing treatment for this diagnosis. It is our intent to make certain the patient not only receives the best medical and surgical care, but has other needs met as well. Cancer survivorship is also included in the Pathway to give the patient a plan of continued care related to breast cancer once treatment is complete. The ultimate goals of the Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Pathway are prevention of fragmented care, coordinated multidisciplinary approach, reduction of risk management problems, seamless personalized patient care and increased efficiency.
