About

The Transitional Year Program is a one year ACGME accredited program located in the beautiful pacific northwest. The program provides a well-balanced graduate medical education with a broad overview of multiple clinical disciplines for up to 22 residents each year. This allows residents who have not yet decided on a specialty the flexibility to experience many different fields of medicine to facilitate choosing a career path. The program provides a comprensive and diverse clinical exerience for physicians who may serve as general medical officers, and meets requirements for residents preselected for categorical residency programs that require a transitional year (radiology, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, and preventive medicine). The program coordinator is located in the Medical Library, which is located on the 2nd floor of the Medical Mall.

Curiculum: The curriculum is divided into 13 four week rotation blocks. There are nine required and four elective rotations. The program works with residents to schedule specific specialty rotations early in the academic year prior to the residency ap-plication process. The curriculum includes the following rotations:

  • Pediatrics Clinic
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Intensive Care Unit
  • Coronary Care Unit
  • Medicine Units
  • Family Medicine Clinic
  • Electives

In addition, the curriculum includes courses in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support, Combat Casualty Care, medical simulation training, and a military unique curriculum. Residents participate in a variety of events to include an annual resident retreat, holiday party, simulated weapons range, and dining-in. Each resident receives a government laptop computer and a dedicated desk and storage space in the transitional year resident workroom. The program is very organized and provides excellent resident support.

Hours: Variable based upon on the clinical rotation. However, all rotations adhere to ACGME work hour restrictions.
