The U.S. Army-Baylor Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant (EMPA) Residency is an 18 month program that incorporates a variety of clinical rotations, formal didactic instruction, and research. The residency prepares the EMPA to evaluate, diagnose, and stabilize those conditions which pose an immediate threat to life and limb. The U.S. Army EMPA Residency is unique in that it exists within an established Emergency Medicine Residency, enhancing educational and research opportunities. In collaboration with Baylor University as the sponsoring university, the EMPA Residency was approved as the first DSC degree producing program specifically for PA's in 2007.

The Emergency Department

Madigan’s volume and acuity provide an optimal training experience for the Emergency Medicine Resident. We see an average of 60,000 patients per year, with a 20 percent admission rate. Our patients are a diverse group, with all ages represented and the full spectrum of medical, surgical, obstetric, and pediatric illness. Madigan is also a Level II Trauma Center and accepts civilian patients through its affiliation with the Tacoma Trauma Trust.

EMPA Residents spend approximately 5 months in the Emergency Department at Madigan throughout the program. The remainder of the time is spent at Harborview Medical Center, Tacoma General and Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital. Other rotations at Madigan include critical care, ultrasound, and anesthesiology.
