About

The Department of Medicine prides itself on the high caliber of education it provides to its residents and to rotating medical students and other trainees. This consistent dedication to excellence has led to the outstanding regional and Army-wide reputation that our residency program and its graduates enjoy.

Graduates from Madigan’s Internal Medicine Residency Program are well known for the outstanding clinical and academic preparation that they receive during their training. Madigan residents are also very successful competing for the fellowship of their choice, and consistently demonstrate research excellence through high rates of abstract acceptance for regional and national meetings and regular peer-reviewed publications.

As an Internal Medicine resident at Madigan, you will be exposed to a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions in a diverse population of patients in our busy and growing academic medical center. This program will provide you with the requisite skills to be outstanding general internist, and will also provide excellent preparation for additional subspecialty training, operational medicine, or a career in clinical investigation.

Unique Highlights within the Madigan Internal Medicine Program

Customized Learning Opportunities

Our residency program prides itself with the individualized instruction and customized learning plans that we provide to our trainees. Without fellows to compete with for clinical experience, residents have ample one on one time with staff and more autonomy as the team leader in our busy, diverse clinical environment. These unique features help ensure that Madigan residents are well-prepared to independently care for a full spectrum of common and complex internal medicine patients.

Our strong academic schedule includes an individualized reading program which has been very effective to prepare residents for the annual in training exam. We also have weekly board review sessions for our senior residents to ensure that Madigan graduates are well prepared for their board exam, evidenced by our outstanding board pass rate.

Located on one of the largest Army posts in the United States, many Madigan residents have also chosen to pursue unique military medicine experiences available in our area. Our elective experiences with local medical units and trauma ICU rotation in Landstuhl (Germany) provide excellent educational opportunities to develop a better appreciation for military medicine and to advance the interests of those individuals interested in an operational career.

Realistic, In Depth Simulation Curriculum

Madigan is a Center of Excellence for simulation based medical education within the Department of Defense. The internal medicine curriculum provided both through the Anderson Simulation Center and the Just In Time Simulation Annex at the main hospital provides residents with state of the art training opportunities to evaluate and manage common and complex medical scenarios; to practice ACLS algorithms, leadership and teamwork skills in code situations; and to refine their procedure skills in central line placement, lumbar puncture, intubation, thoracentesis and more.

Geriatric and Palliative Medicine

Madigan is the only training site with a combined VA-DOD Geriatrics Fellowship Program, located at the nearby American Lake VA. Residents receive a broad exposure to the medical issues of elderly patients in a variety of settings during their intern Geriatrics rotation, including the inpatient, nursing home, dementia unit and home environment.

Madigan is also the only hospital in the DOD to offer a Palliative Care Consult Service, and is a recognized center of excellence in this area. Residents work with our outstanding, board certified palliative care specialists caring for both inpatients at Madigan and working first hand at a local inpatient Hospice facility to provide ongoing inpatient and home care. Residents regularly identify this experience as one of the best rotations in the program.

Research

Our Department of Medicine Research Committee encourages and fosters resident participation and publication of case reports and original research. The committee maintains a database of research opportunities, and works with residents and their research mentors to ensure that they use research time effectively to turn ideas into results. This research emphasis has led to a large number of resident-directed projects and publications, and helped Madigan residents to consistently excel in a wide variety of state, regional and national meetings. Residents find themselves well prepared for academic careers and competitive for fellowship selection through these research endeavors. Madigan Army Medical Center also has facilities for clinical trials, cell-culture studies and genetic engineering.

A Great Place to Live

The Pacific Northwest is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and offers a wide array of cultural opportunities. The beautiful Olympic and Cascade Mountains provide hundreds of hiking trails and multiple ski resorts only a few hours drive away. The Seattle-Olympia region tends to be bike friendly, and cycling is a common activity in our area. As Washington’s largest urban center, the Puget Sound region offers an extraordinary variety of entertainment options, including professional and college sports teams, theatres, music venues, and a wealth of historical and architectural attractions. And of course, there’s a great coffee shop on every block!
