About

The Madigan Pharmacy Residency Program is a challenging and dynamic teaching program. The program was accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists in 1997. Madigan Army Medical Center is a 200-plus bed, tertiary care hospital and ambulatory care center allowing our residents and staff to deliver care continuity in a patient-centered home model. The pharmacy residency is a small program enrolling one military and one civilian resident each academic year. This allows our team of dedicated clinical faculty to tailor the program to meet many of the specific learning experience goals of our residents. The goal of our program as shared in our purpose statement is to develop competent and confident pharmacist-practitioners that can function as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team providing leadership and improving the delivery of patient care. The program leadership and teaching faculty strive to promote effective teamwork and excellence in all we do.

The Curriculum

Our program offers core rotations of orientation, ambulatory patient care, pediatric inpatient care, cardiology ambulatory care, critical care and oncology. We also offer a unique service member care experience providing training in pain management and psycopharmacotherapy. Our program offer electives in neurology, infectious diseases, patient safety and emergency medicine. Longitudinal experiences are practice management, resident project, staffing and care continuity clinic. Residents are required to participate in case conferences, disease state lectures, journal club activities, adverse drug reaction monitoring and reporting, quality improvement activities, newsletter publication and complete a residency project.

The Faculty

Our program has thirteen highly dedicated faculty members with an average of 22 years of practice experience. Many of our faculty are board certified and hold specialty credentials in various areas of practice. Our teaching faculty and clinical staff are independently privileged by the facility credentials committee allowing them to provide pharmaceutical care in an advanced practice environment. The staff and faculty are committed to working with our residents and students to help them excel and achieve their professional goals. The program director and the faculty see great value in fostering a dynamic learning atmosphere for our residents and our staff.

The Department of Pharmacy

Madigan is the second largest Army medical center with an outpatient pharmacy filling up to 5,000 prescriptions a day. Our inpatient pharmacy is a 24-hour operation providing unit dose and IV admixture services in a modern, 797-compliant service center. Our decentralized pharmacists actively participate in interdisciplinary patient care services and medication management. We proudly serve a diverse patient population of service members, retirees and family members. Madigan is a Level II Trauma Center and we receive patients through our affiliation with the Tacoma Trauma Trust.
