TRICARE Health Benefits

TRICARE Health Benefits

TRICARE is managed by the Defense Health Agency (DHA) under the policy guidance and direction of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs) (ASD[HA]). The DHA manages the TRICARE budget, executes TRICARE policies and oversees the entire TRICARE health program.

As a major component of the Military Health System, the TRICARE health program combines the health care resources at military hospitals and clinics (or direct care) with networks of civilian health care professionals, institutions, pharmacies and suppliers to provide access to high-quality health care services while maintaining the capability to support military operations.

TRICARE partners with Health Net Federal Services as its regional contractor in the Western United States to provide health care services and support to beneficiaries.

TRICARE Open Season

TRICARE Open Season is the annual period when you can enroll in or change your health plan for the next year. It occurs each fall, beginning on the Monday of the second full week in November to the Monday of the second full week in December. During TRICARE Open Season, you can:

  • Enroll in a new TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select plan
  • Change your enrollment (e.g., from individual to family)

If you are happy with your current TRICARE health plan, you don't have to take any action to stay enrolled.

To learn more, please visit TRICARE Open Season.

Making Enrollment Changes Outside of Open Season

Outside of TRICARE Open Season, you can enroll in or change enrollment to TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select following a Qualifying Life Event (QLE).

A QLE is a certain change in your life, such as marriage, birth of a child, or retirement from active duty, which may mean different TRICARE options are available to you. A TRICARE QLE opens a 90-day period for you to make eligible enrollment changes. A QLE for one family member means all family members may make enrollment changes. To learn more, visit TRICARE Life Events.

Retiree (FEDVIP) Dental and Vision Plans

As of Jan. 1, 2019, dental and vision plans are available through the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP), offered by the Office of Personnel Management.

Not sure if you’re eligible? You can check by using the FEDVIP Eligibility Checker.

How do I enroll or change my FEDVIP plan?

  • You can enroll in, change, or cancel a FEDVIP dental and/or vision plan during the next FEDVIP open season (it occurs each fall) or after experiencing a FEDVIP qualifying life event (QLE).

Remember, FEDVIP QLEs may be different from the TRICARE QLEs. For a complete list of FEDVIP QLEs, please vist the BENEFEDS website.
