The Joint Base Lewis-McChord Armed Forces Wellness Center (AFWC) augment the prevention and wellness capabilities of the Army Medical Home (AMH). The core services provided by the AFWC engage patients through the use of technology, one-on-one education, and health coaching to improve wellbeing and readiness in the areas of physical fitness, nutrition, stress management, and tobacco use. The AFWC activates the Performance Triad (Nutrition, Activity, and Sleep) and are a key weapon in the campaign to reduce rates of obesity and empower individuals to manage their health in the Life Space. AFWC and AMH operations are synchronized to ensure that patient transitions are easy and seamless and that coordination of care between the AMH and the AFWC is efficient and effective.

Primary Services

The Armed Forces Wellness Centers offer six core services:

  • Health assessment review: Provides a quick analysis of an individual's health status, risk for disease, and determines if an increase in physical activity is safe. (Risk stratification, Wellness Questionnaires, Biometric Screening).
  • Physical fitness: Using advanced technology to assess current physical fitness level to generate information that is used to customize an exercise program that meets an individual's needs and goals. (Sub-maximal V02 testing, exercise prescription).
  • Health nutrition: Healthy eating is enhanced with the use of metabolic testing that synchronizes an individual's resting metabolic rate to provide tailored strategies for weight loss, gain or maintenance. (Metabolic Testing, Healthy Nutrition Education, Weight Management).
  • Stress management: These services include biofeedback and education in stress relief techniques, positive coping skills, detecting cognitive distortions (e.g., false thoughts that are obstacles to self-motivation) and good sleep habits.
  • General wellness education: Topics presented in these classes include healthy lifestyles, good sleep habits, increased resiliency, preventing chronic disease through healthy living habits, and self-care. These education programs may also be provided for at other installation locations and events (e.g., on-post schools, health fairs, Child, Youth & School (CYS) programs, etc.).
  • Tobacco education: Tobacco education component includes an assessment of an individual's readiness to change, a discussion of possible options for becoming tobacco-free, and provision of the appropriate tobacco awareness/cessation education. If the client desires pharmacotherapy in conjunction with the tobacco cessation education, a referral would be provided to the Primary Care Manager (PCM) or another appropriately credentialed provider.
